Planning wedding fireworks

A practical guide for couples and planners adding fireworks to the evening, from the first venue call to the last burst.

A fireworks moment can be the quiet send-off after the last dance or the finale that lights up the whole reception. Either way, the best ones are planned alongside the rest of the day, with the venue, the planner and the band all working from the same timeline.

This page is the planning guide. It covers the questions couples ask first, the order in which to answer them, and what happens between the first call and the show. If you would rather see finished work, see our wedding portfolio and video.

Garden State Fireworks is a family business that has been designing shows since 1890, and weddings have been part of our calendar for decades. Tell us your date and your venue, and we will help you work out what is realistic there.

What we do for couples and planners

We build wedding shows around the evening you have planned. That can mean a short, intimate addition after the first dance, or a large finale to close the night. For couples who want something more personal, our set-piece and lance designs can put a name, a monogram or a shape in the sky for every guest to see.

Some venues are not suited to a large outdoor display. For those, our subsidiary Garden State Pyro makes indoor and close proximity effects, and can combine them with outdoor fireworks for an intense, close-up finish. Which effects suit a particular room or lawn depends on the site, so tell us about the room or lawn and we will talk through the options with you Placeholder. Planning tips

  1. Ask the venue first

Before you fall in love with an idea, ask the venue whether fireworks are allowed on its grounds and what it requires. Some sites have rules of their own, and the answer shapes every other choice.

  2. Choose the moment

Decide where the show sits in the evening: after the first dance, after dinner or as the last event. Tell your planner and band early so music and speeches leave space for it.

  3. Plan the viewing spot

Guests need a clear view and a comfortable place to stand or sit. Walk the site at dusk if you can and mark where everyone will watch from. Placeholder. TODO: confirm with client (confirm the viewing distances Garden State Fireworks recommends)

  4. Share one timeline

Give the planner, photographer, caterer and band the same schedule, including a rough show length. The photographer in particular will want to know where to stand.

  5. Prepare for weather

Wind, rain and fog can all affect an outdoor show. Agree on a backup plan with your venue and your fireworks company before the day. Placeholder. TODO: confirm with client (confirm how long couples should allow for a rain date)

  6. Make it personal

A set piece or lance design can carry a monogram, a date or a shape that means something to you. Ask about options when you request your quote.

Common questions

Do wedding venues allow fireworks?

Many do, but the decision belongs to the venue and, for the site itself, the local fire official. Ask the venue early whether outdoor fireworks are permitted, where a show could be placed and who must approve it. Some venues welcome fireworks and others limit them to certain areas or indoor effects.

How far ahead should we plan wedding fireworks?

Earlier is easier. Popular dates fill up, and venues, planners and local officials all need time to weigh in. Start the conversation as soon as your date and venue are set, then confirm details together as the wedding gets closer.

When during the reception should the fireworks go off?

Most couples choose a moment that gives guests a clear view and a natural pause, such as a grand exit, the end of the evening or right after the first dance. Share the reception timeline with your planner, band or DJ so the show fits the flow of the night and guests know where to gather.
